One of the most important architectural complexes at Chichen Itza is that which centers on the Nunnery (or Nun's House). The large number of rooms within its upper temples suggested to explorers of the Colonial period that the building was used as a convent for priestesses. In fact, the edifice must have been a civic-ceremonial center during the rule of the priests of Old Chichen.

In this image, the Church, a square building with a single vaulted room, is on the left, and one end of the Nunnery is on the right.
